Liv Romano

I owe a lot to Spotify’s ‘Smart Shuffle’ feature; the discovery of Liv Romano’s music sits at the top of that list.

In an age increasingly dominated by technology, I find the recentering force of music very powerful. So, when Liv Romano’s ethereal voice started singing from my speakers, I knew this was a talent I had to hear more of. Labelled as ‘the female Hozier’, Romano entangles raw emotion and natural imagery of forests and fields in her music. Devastating lyrics softly convey the human experience:

“I’ll love you ‘til we’re bones, ‘til roots crawl through our clothes.”

Exploring nature and feeling with such gentle poignance sets her music apart from the human world, launching it into an almost unearthly, magical realm.

She puts a gut-wrenching sprinkle of pixie dust over the folk genre. She is fairy folk.

Very few artists can emulate the act of touching grass and reconnecting with the earth, but Liv Romano perfectly embodies this feeling. With music inspired by The Lumineers, Noah Kahan and Hozier, it’s no wonder that Romano’s sound is gaining attention.

Her career has been long in the making. At 13 years old, Liv Romano taught herself to play her dad’s guitar, and her passion for writing evolved into a talent for songwriting. First releasing her songs on Spotify at the beginning of 2024, Romano’s second single ‘only light’ sits at well over 2 million listens.

But, her most recent single, ‘lasso the moon’, has been rapidly gaining popularity - and rightly so! Liv’s harmonious voice softly explores heartfelt lyrics about enduring love and truly highlights the depth of her music. The phrase ‘Lasso the moon’ gestures to the classic film ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, referencing George Bailey’s romantic line: “You want the moon? Just say the word, and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down”. Liv Romano is pioneering fairy folk with very intentional, delicate nuances.

Amassing 160K Instagram followers and 178K monthly Spotify listeners, Liv Romano’s fanbase is ever-growing. As the artist herself says: “I've always wanted to create my own little world where I can invite my listeners into that feels safe”. Branding this safe space as ‘the pond’, Romano has carved out a calming community with her ethereal sound and whimsical interactions with listeners. The image of her pond-like community is an extension of her soothing contributions to the fairy folk genre. Frogs are of particular significance to Liv, with her frog teddy, Fern, as well as frog emojis dominating her social media platforms. She even has froggy friendship necklaces available on her website, branding her music as a folk fellowship.

The lack of capitalised letters in her song titles are another extension of Liv’s sound. Her lyrics are delivered tenderly, understated as if performed in lowercase, which makes them all the more heartrending.

Certainly destined for great things, Liv Romano is a refreshing force, gently guiding listeners on a beautifully devastating journey of earthly reconnection with her music.
