Interview: Rising Star Liv Romano on her new single ‘Oklahoma’

Folk artist Liv Romano has been winning over listeners since she began releasing her music on Spotify in 2024.

Teaching herself to play her dad’s guitar at the age of thirteen, Liv has since blossomed into an emerging singer-songwriter with immense talent. Her whimsical, raw music has been labelled as ‘fairy folk’, drawing from influences such as The Lumineers, Noah Kahan and Hozier.

Romano’s fanbase, affectionately named ‘the pond’, watched in anticipation as she teased her new single ‘Oklahoma’ on social media. At the end of July, ‘Oklahoma’ dropped and fans went crazy for it (and we can see why!).

Encapsulating the tumultuous experience of moving away and missing home, Liv Romano’s new single is delicately devastating.

We chatted with Liv Romano to hear her experience of writing ‘Oklahoma’ and understand the emotion behind the new release.

What was your inspiration behind Oklahoma and where did the idea for the song first come from?

• At the time, I was going through a huge bout of writer's block. I wasn’t happy with anything that I had been writing. I moved away from my hometown almost five years ago. I grew up in a small town and left it behind to move to a really big city to chase my dreams. I was talking with my friend at the time and telling him how lonely it has been since moving by myself and dealing with being homesick all the time. To be honest, I don’t know why… maybe because it sang the best out of all the states - but I chose Oklahoma because it seemed like a desolate place at the time… and I wanted to capture the feeling of loneliness.

What do you hope fans get from the release?

• I hope fans can hold onto the song as a way for them to feel a little less lonely.

What was your creative process for the song? Was it any different from your regular production process?

• No, not necessarily. Other than the fact that I had some pretty extreme writer's block, it was pretty much the same... I will say though, we wrote the entire song outside in Nashville which isn’t that usual. I’m used to being holed up in the studio all day writing music. But I think getting outside in nature was one of the reasons I was able to write Oklahoma. 

I’ve seen a lot of positivity online regarding Oklahoma (understandably so!). Are you happy with the impact it’s had?

• Of course! I always just hope that my music impacts my listeners in a positive way. I’ve had a lot of very sweet messages and comments about how much Oklahoma has meant to my listeners. Some have found it as a comfort as they’ve been moving away from their home whether it be for college, a job, etc. and others simply just love the cinematic aspect of the song. 

What’s next for Liv Romano? Is there a specific goal you have in mind?

• I have just been in the studio a lot lately. I’ve been working on new music with some of my best friends, so that’s been incredibly fun. I am still releasing single songs for now and I am beginning to do more shows, so hopefully I can meet some of my fans - which I would honestly love. Other than that, I am being intentional about the music I’m creating and the visuals that I am bringing to life with each song that I put out! I am trying to build my fanbase on streaming platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, etc. so I have been releasing consistently :)
