Olivia Rodrigo

It’s no secret that our attention is becoming increasingly difficult to capture. The most successful campaigns surrounding new music releases need to generate anticipation, positioning the artist’s work as culturally relevant and something that people genuinely want to engage with. Music releases today are about so much more than just the music.

So, you want to see an absolute masterclass in marketing new releases?

Look no further than Olivia Rodrigo and her team.

When it comes to music marketing that creates cultural moments, Olivia’s team know their stuff, and then some! Instead of bombarding fans with meaningless content, the campaign surrounding Olivia’s new album invites Livies across the globe to participate in the narrative and become a part of something larger. Many elements of the marketing strategy have sparked speculation and caused crazy hype around the album.

Someone give those folks a raise!

We HAVE to Talk About the Wall

First things first, I have never been more intrigued by A WALL in my entire life.

This is about so much more than just a wall. What started out as a promotional mural quickly became a viral talking point, sparking speculation among both fans and people outside of the fanbase.

On day one, a wall in Los Angeles was painted deep purple, the colour of Olivia’s signature album cover, to promote her highly anticipated album. No big deal, right? Wrong! Overnight, the wall was painted a lighter shade of purple by people wearing Olivia Rodrigo merch. The shade of the wall became increasingly lighter day-by-day until it ended up as a lighter pink, which is the shade of the new album cover (spoiler alert!).

People posted daily updates about the wall, which received thousands of views, with a few even reaching over one million! The comments were flooded with speculation as users discussed album colour theories, and some even expressed how invested they were despite not being Olivia Rodrigo fans! To even engage tons of non-fans with an album campaign is a true testament to its genius.

It’s the ultimate slow burn. People were literally watching paint dry… and they couldn’t get enough of it!

New additions to the pink wall continued to emerge. For example, the word ‘love’ appeared on the wall in a font which has now become a signature of Olivia’s new era. This development added yet another layer of detail for Livvies to decode and decipher, further accelerating the hype. Since the album’s release, we now know that the curly typeface hints to the deeply personal, intimate, diary-esque nature of Olivia’s new lyrics.

The wall eventually revealed the name of the new album, ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’. And fans were obsessed.

A LinkedIn post on this topic particularly caught my attention. Sophie Apps made a valuable contribution to the discussion by sharing that: “Olivia has synesthesia, where she experiences sounds as colours, the wall could embody a progression of how she's grown as an artist from purple to this dusty pink or [insert final colour]. So, a literal translation of how the album feels to her.”

The level of speculation that this stunt caused needs to be studied because it was so simple, but so engaging due to the level of curiosity it sparked globally. The amount of discourse was insane. People were even paying attention to when the lift was beside the wall because this indicated new updates, and videos about the wall were blowing up completely.

Olivia Rodrigo’s album was beyond viral before it was even released, and it was all thanks to a wall!

But wait, I actually haven’t finished speaking about walls (I promise I’m nearly done).

After the album’s lead single ‘Drop Dead’ was released on 17th April 2026, another promotional pink wall appeared over in New York City, and it featured one of the iconic lyrics from the song: ‘cause I got chewing gum and a bunch of stuff I’d like to know’. Written in the same iconic, curly font, the wall encouraged fans to interact by chewing their own gum and sticking it to the pink wall. A Hubba Bubba container stood alongside to help Livvies decorate the wall and immerse themselves in the cultural moment created by the music rollout.

And, what’s more, hundreds of thousands engaged with the sticky stunt virtually, as videos about the gum wall generated even more OR hype.

@cosmeowpolitan I will always love Olivia Rodrigo promo!!! The NYC drop dead gum wall was so cutie #dropdead #oliviarodrigo #nyclife #nyc #girlsoinlove @HUBBA BUBBA @livies hq 🩷 ♬ drop dead - Olivia Rodrigo

The Iconic OR Font

Now, the signature typeface accompanying Olivia’s new era deserves more attention.

The significance of the font stretched way beyond the promotional walls. In the middle of June, Instagram took things a step further and released a built-in feature which allowed users to use Olivia Rodrigo’s new signature typeface on their Stories, edits and Reels. Pushing the font beyond just a simple branding element, this move was another impeccable example of the campaign of creating an interactive experience for fans to engage in the album release.

One of Instagram’s official accounts, @design, posted to inform their 2.9 million followers about the new feature and contributed to the attention surrounding the exciting campaign feature.

I think the best part of this feature is that it doesn’t feel like marketing; it just feels like fun. And every story, Reel and edit that uses the typeface promotes Olivia’s music and becomes an extension of her new album rollout, which if you ask me is pure genius. It spreads the promotion organically over social media, and strengthens the community-feel that is already very present among Olivia Rodrigo’s fans.

Both the wall(s) and the font are a perfect example of visual, interactive marketing executed to perfection. Hats off to everybody involved, seriously.

Our Anti-AI Queen

As we’ve established, visuals are a massive part of any new music rollout.

In a refreshing move that further cultivates community, Olivia Rodrigo commissioned artists to create her lyric videos. Not only does this decision support small artists, it’s also prompted a lot of anti-AI discourse around the promotion of music.

@cutcreaser yes to human art!! 🎨✍️ the rollout for the newest album from @Olivia Rodrigo has been a treat for my eyes!!! 🪡🩷 @livies hq 🩷 #youseemprettysadforagirlsoinlove #oliviarodrigo #art #music ♬ stupid song - Olivia Rodrigo

It also relays back to the themes of intimacy conjured by the vulnerable lyrics and diary-esque style of Olivia’s third album. The artists hand-made the videos so the lyrics visually resemble diary entries. String, paint, paper, and pens are among some of the mediums the artists used to create Olivia’s authentic, inherently human stop motion videos.

Olivia Rodrigo’s album campaign has an even stronger human feel when you consider her album cover. The cover for ‘You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love depicts Olivia throwing her head back whilst sitting on a swing in front of a perfect-looking blue sky.

The image is so idealistic that AI or production must surely be involved in its creation… you would think.

In actual fact, Olivia posted a video of herself on a swing to her TikTok followers and simply screengrabbed a moment from that to use as her album cover. So refreshingly simple in the age of overproduction and AI.

Olivia as the Face of… Well Everything

When it comes to brand collaborations, Olivia and her team have coordinated some iconic partnerships that form part of the wider campaign around the release.

Boy, her marketing team really left no stone unturned.

Having a relationship with streaming platforms is massively important for large artists. So, what could be better for Olivia than releasing exclusive music videos on both Spotify and Apple Music? It is a monumental achievement to promote her new album on two of the largest streaming platforms on the planet, and she nailed it.

Alongside collaborating with two music streaming powerhouses, the OR team have been working overtime to secure some of the biggest, most iconic partnerships I’ve seen in a long time. For example, five unique Olivia Rodrigo LEGO sets dropped, creating touchpoints for consumers as well as deepening the connection with her younger, Gen Alpha fanbase. Brilliant.

The list of Olivia’s partnerships really does go on: a Fortnite skin, exclusive Target merch, a Hollister graphic tee range, the face of Miu Miu’s 2026 campaign and an FC Barcelona x Spotify jersey sponsorship. Only a few gigantic names in that list (there are so many it’s insane). This wide range of partnerships allows Olivia to connect with a variety of demographics alongside her core audience.

Let’s Give the Team Their Flowers

Olivia’s team really did deliver on every single level.  Her latest rollout is an absolute masterclass in creating meaningful connections and engaging fans (and even non-fans) to create buzz and excitement around an album release.

Livies played an active role in uncovering Olivia’s new era as fan-driven speculation, strategic partnerships, and social media presence were at the heart of the release campaign’s dazzling success.

We all need to give Olivia Rodrigo’s team their flowers. Marketing the artist’s undeniable talent so flawlessly is the ultimate achievement.
